Authorities in Iran will make use of video surveillance to prosecute possible violations of the Islamic dress code and exert greater pressure on women to wear the veil.

A parliamentary commission wants to extend to these cases the surveillance already used in public spaces to detect other types of infractions, as reported by the daily ‘Etemad’.

In this regard, the authorities have explained that women will be alerted by text message to possible violations. In the event that this violation of the dress code is repeated, fines will be applied.

Many women in the main cities of the country do not wear the veil, so critical voices claim that there is no social support for this type of measures, especially after months of protests against the government for the death of the young Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini, who died after being beaten while in police custody for violating the dress code.

Amini has become a symbol of the anti-government demonstrations, which have provoked the worst political crisis in decades, although during the last few weeks the protests have diminished.
