The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, said on Thursday, together with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, that the process of accession to the European Union is a «motivation» for all Ukrainian people and for the troops fighting on the battlefield against the Russian Army.
In a statement from Kiev, where about fifteen European commissioners have gone to discuss face to face with the Ukrainian government the progress of the EU accession, Zelenski assured that the European path is a «motivation» to defend against the Russian attack, after pointing out Moscow as a «common enemy» that represents the «most anti-European forces in the world».
In this regard, he stressed that the Ukrainian Army defends European values and insisted that all steps towards further integration with the EU «inspire the people».
«EU membership will be taken with the same aspiration as the candidate status and for that we need a motivating accession process so that it will be seen that the struggle of Ukrainians is supported by the whole Europe,» Zelenski pointed out.
During the visit of the commissioners and the bilateral summit on Friday with the President of the European Council Charles Michel, the European bloc will offer Ukraine to strengthen its participation in European programs to facilitate its integration into the single market, pending the accession process to the bloc that has been going on for years.
This ‘roadmap’ will be the central element discussed by Von der Leyen and Zelenski, with measures on trade and economy, customs, industrial products and telecommunications, which together with Ukraine’s participation in tax, digital and research programs seeks further integration into the European economy and facilitate alignment with the acquis communautaire.
