U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced Wednesday the seizure of an Iranian arms shipment in the Gulf of Oman that was destined for Yemen.
«The interdiction took place (…) on January 15, along routes historically used for illegal arms trafficking from Iran to Yemen. More than 3,000 assault rifles, 578,000 rounds of ammunition and 23 advanced anti-tank guided missiles were recovered,» CENTCOM has detailed in a statement.
The U.S. Army recalled that it «regularly» conducts regional operations with partner naval forces to enhance maritime security, highlighting seizure efforts that have prevented the passage of more than 5,000 weapons and 1.6 million rounds of ammunition into Yemen in recent months.
CENTCOM, in 2021, prevented 9,000 illegal weapons from reaching Yemen, an amount that marked a 200 percent increase in the number of weapons seized over the previous year.
A U.S. official has confirmed that the Navy assisted the French Army in the aforementioned operation, CNN has learned.
