Human Rights activists and union activists have called on Wednesday for the «democratization of the judicial system in Argentina», repudiating «the proscription» of the country’s vice-president, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.

The demonstrators – in front of the Buenos Aires Courthouse – also demanded progress in the case investigating the assassination attempt against Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, which «is advancing at a snail’s pace» because «they do not want it to be known who was behind the attack», according to the news agency Télam.

«We are flooded with great satisfaction and great pride, for this unity with mobilizations and acts, to demand the democratization of the judicial system and to put an end to these 4 supremes of (in)justice», highlighted Hugo Godoy, head of the Central de los Trabajadores Argentinos Autónoma (CTAA) and the Asociación Trabajadores del Estado (ATE).

«We were here a year ago and at that time we were saying removal and impeachment of the court judges. Today impeachment is a reality», said the Secretary General of CTA and Deputy of the Frente de Todos (FdT), Hugo Yasky.

He also denounced the scandal of the alleged chats between Macri’s officials, media businessmen and judges where «the rottenness of Lago Escondido» came to light, in allusion to a trip where judges, politicians and media businessmen allegedly forged a common strategy in defense of former President Mauricio Macri, one day after the conviction of Vice-President Cristina Fernández.

Judge Juan María Ramos Padilla, one of the promoters of the march, has urged that «judges start behaving like workers and attend to their people», calling for «political sovereignty, economic independence and social justice» and calling to recover «justice for the Argentines» based on «a deep judicial reform».

Meanwhile, Godoy pointed out that the SC «is at the service of the interests of privilege» and recalled that when «the impeachment trial was set in motion, the first to say that they disagreed were the 500 big businessmen».

«Here we are to repudiate and shout very loudly Enough of judicial mafia, enough with this nefarious judicial party. And we have to support with all our strength this political trial that is being made to the Supreme Court», said Taty Almeida, who belongs to Madres de Plaza de Mayo Línea Fundadora.

The national deputy Juan Marino (FdT) said that this act «has to be the beginning of a great campaign of mobilization throughout the country», while he asked «to culminate with a great mobilization on March 24 to say enough to the judicial mafia and in defense of democracy».

Argentine authorities, such as the Minister of the Interior, Eduardo de Pedro, have criticized on numerous occasions the «deterioration» of the Judiciary for its alleged collusion with former President Mauricio Macri.

«We have a diagnosis that has to do with a state of deterioration of the Judiciary. We have been warning about it since Macri’s famous decree that appointed two judges of the Court on commission. We are concerned about the state of a sector of the Judiciary», said the Minister in December.

In fact, the Argentine president, Alberto Fernandez, has initiated a parliamentary procedure to dismiss the Supreme Court for «poor performance of its functions» and «partiality».

The president justified this unusual step by appealing to his own duty — «on assuming my mandate I swore to observe and enforce the Constitution as far as it depended on me»–, for which he trusts to «prevent further manipulation of the Council of the Magistrature with unusual jurisprudential interpretations which allow the Judicial Power to interfere in the decisions of the National Congress».

Fernandez and her number two, Vice President Cristina Fernandez, have spared no criticism in recent months against the judicial leadership, which they consider to be at the service of the political interests of opposition leaders such as Mauricio Macri. Both have framed the recent conviction of the vice-president for corruption as part of this alleged persecution.
