Senator Marcos do Val, of the conservative Podemos party, has assured that the former president of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro sought to convince him to carry out a coup d’état, taking advantage of his military experience, during a meeting they held with the former deputy Daniel Silveira, now detained.
«I was angry when they called me Bolsonarista. You expected me to drop a bombshell. On Friday will come out in ‘Veja’ (Brazilian magazine) Bolsonaro’s attempt to convince me so that I could stage a coup with him,» he revealed on Wednesday night in a live broadcast through his social networks.
After denouncing Bolsonaro’s alleged coup aspirations, Do Val used his Instagram profile to announce that after four years as senator for the state of Espírito Santo he was leaving politics for good and would return with his family to the United States to continue his career.
However, he has later recanted and confirmed that he will continue to occupy his seat in the Senate. Hours earlier he had stated that the offenses he had received were weighing heavily on his family and that his time and health were not enough.
For his part, the first of the former Brazilian president’s offspring, also senator Flavio Bolsonaro, has confirmed the existence of that meeting that took place in December, but has ruled out that what was discussed at the meeting constituted a crime.
«In our legislation, at least, it is not a crime. Even if it is true, because I don’t know if it is, talking about it is not a crime. Carrying it out would be. A crime, from my point of view, a minor one,» he said.
Flavio Bolsonaro, however, did criticize that Do Val used the climate of «freedom» and «trust» that existed in that meeting to record and «harm» Silveira. «That is not in our principles and I do not agree with that in any way,» he protested.
At the same time, he criticized Do Val for changing versions «from one hour to another» and asked him to analyze «calmly» the whole situation. Even so, he said that the Podemos senator let him know that the idea was «something» of Silveira’s and that Bolsonaro did not want to have «anything to do with it.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes has authorized his interrogation, after the Federal Police filed a request after Do Val disclosed on social networks «relevant information» for the investigation opened for the coup attacks of January 8. The appointment is scheduled for this Thursday.
Do Val’s resignation threat came just hours after deputies and senators from both chambers of the Brazilian Congress took office. In the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira was re-elected president, confirming not only the expectations, but also achieving a record vote, with more than 92 percent of the votes after the agreement of about fifteen benches.
In the Senate, the vote was somewhat closer, but in the end Rodrigo Pacheco revalidated his mandate, winning over Rogério Marinho, thanks in part to pressure from Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s Workers’ Party (PT), which won the first clash of the legislature.
