The UK Government on Tuesday ruled out the possibility of sending fighter jets to improve the military capability of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, as it considers it «impractical» because of the long time required for training just to fly this type of aircraft.
Hours after U.S. President Joe Biden confirmed that Washington is not considering supplying aircraft to Ukraine, a Downing Street spokesman has explained that London will not do the same with equipment such as the F35 or the Typhoon, as reported by the British newspaper ‘The Guardian’.
The British spokesman said that both fighters are «extremely sophisticated» and, therefore, «it takes months to learn how to fly them». Thus, London is open to «explore» other avenues of assistance and is committed to «listen carefully» to the requests coming from Kiev.
The debate on the potential sending of fighters, which in principle remains a red line for the main Western powers, comes after some of these same governments pledged to contribute with tanks to the defense of Ukraine against the Russian invasion.
