The Azerbaijani government on Tuesday called on its citizens to avoid «unnecessary travel» to Iran, days after the death of the head of the security service of its embassy in Tehran in an armed attack on the diplomatic legation.
«Due to the unstable situation in Iran and the terrorist attack on our country’s diplomatic mission, Azerbaijani citizens are advised not to visit Iran unless necessary,» the Azeri Foreign Ministry said.
In a statement published on its website, it stressed that «those who make visits should adopt greater caution», while calling on Azeris already in Iran to «respect security regulations».
Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Jalaf Jalafov said Monday that Baku has no confidence in the security guarantees that Iranian authorities can promise for Azeri diplomatic employees following last week’s attack, which prompted Azerbaijan to suspend its activities at the legation.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev «fiercely» condemned the «terrorist attack» and called on Iranian authorities to have the incident «promptly investigated and the terrorists punished.»
