The Plenary of the Peruvian Congress has approved by 66 votes in favor, 49 against and 6 abstentions to re-debate and subsequently vote on the possibility of advancing elections to later this year, one of the main demands of the protests that have been shaking the country for 53 days and have claimed some 60 deaths.
The project to bring forward elections to 2023 has been presented by the president of the Constitution Commission, Hernando Guerra Garcia, according to the Peruvian newspaper ‘La Republica’.
Guerra himself has proposed that each of the parliamentary groups be heard before the final vote, which has been accepted by the president of the Congress, José Williams, who then suspended the session for a break.
«I think we can give a sign of maturity and conversation and according to our country that expects so much, we can propose a way out. We are going to be in the Board of Spokespersons, I invite the vice-president of the Constitution Committee, Congresswoman Camones, and Congressman Cavero to join us», said Williams.
Last Friday, the Congress approved a similar motion, but finally rejected in plenary to bring forward the elections despite the fact that it is one of the main demands of the demonstrators and that it has the support of the interim president, Dina Boluarte.
Peru is in the midst of a deep political crisis following the dismissal by the Congress of former President Pedro Castillo, who announced on December 7 the dissolution of the Andean Parliament and the establishment of an emergency government.
Following the arrest of the former president, tens of thousands of people came out to protest in various parts of the country to demand the resignation of President Boluarte, the dissolution of Congress and the urgent calling of presidential elections. More than 60 people have lost their lives in the riots between demonstrators and security forces.
