North Korea’s regime has ended the confinement decreed for the capital, Pyongyang, following a recent spike in respiratory-type illnesses, without it being clear whether this is due to an increase in cases of COVID-19.
The North Korean authorities ordered a five-day lockdown last week and this Monday has already notified the few embassies present in Pyongyang of the end of the measure, as reported on Facebook by the Russian diplomatic legation.
«We express our deep gratitude to the foreign diplomatic corps for implementing these strong quarantine measures,» reads the letter sent by the North Korean Foreign Ministry, which terminates the confinement as of this Monday, according to Yonhap news agency.
Initially, the authorities had raised the possibility of extending the measure depending on the epidemiological situation.
The North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, declared victory against the pandemic in August 2022, after a few months that the authorities themselves recognized as complicated and in which they even confirmed the first death due to the coronavirus.
