Relatives and relatives of the victims of the 2020 Beirut port explosion have demanded on Saturday the resignation of the country’s attorney general, Ghassan Ueidat, who this week decided to release all those arrested in the case and to charge the investigating judge Tarek Bitar to avoid «bloodshed».
The sixty or so demonstrators gathered outside the Beirut Palace of Justice did not accept these statements and called for the resignation or immediate dismissal of the prosecutor, who has refused to prosecute such prominent suspects as the then Director General of State Security, Tony Saliba, or the then Prime Minister Hassan Diab.
«This man has been obstructing the investigation for two years now and this latest decision has been shameful,» one of the ralliers lamented to the daily ‘L’Orient le Jour’.
The Lebanese capital is in a state of maximum alert before two other rallies called for this Saturday in favor and against the attorney general and from which the families have preferred to dissociate themselves so as not to inflame the situation even more.
In fact, the families themselves have managed to prevent this Saturday’s rally in front of the Palace of Justice from being joined by «suspicious calls» coming from unauthorized sources with the purpose of «inciting violence».
For the time being, the Lebanese Army has already closed off several neighborhoods, in particular Shiyah, Ain el Remane and Tayune, which were already the scene of heavy clashes last year, reports the Naharnet news portal.
