The Somali government has dismissed Police Chief Abdi Hassan Mohamed and put Sulub Ahmed Firin in charge of the agency following the latest attacks by the Al Shabaab terrorist group, although the reasons for the decision are not yet known.
According to information gathered by the Somali state news agency SONNA, the decision to replace Mohamed, who has been at the head of the police for five years, was taken during a meeting of the Council of Ministers.
The decision came days after Al Shabaab carried out an attack on the office of the mayor of Mogadishu, an event that left at least six people dead and raised doubts about the security arrangements in the Somali capital.
Somalia has in recent months stepped up offensives against Al Shabaab with the support of local clans and militias as part of a series of decisions taken by President Hassan Shaykh Mohamud, who pledged on taking office to put the fight against terrorism at the heart of his efforts to stabilize the African country.
