The head of the Ukrainian presidential office, Andriy Yermak, on Wednesday applauded Germany’s decision on the delivery of battle tanks to Kiev to cope with the Russian invasion and advocated creating «a coalition of tanks» to fight Russia’s troops.
«The first step has been taken. The next is a coalition of tanks,» said Yermak, who has stressed that Ukraine needs many Leopards, Ukrainian news agency UNIAN has reported. He has also posted several ‘emojis’ of leopards on his account on the social network Twitter in response to Berlin’s announcement.
Yermak’s words have come minutes after Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz confirmed Berlin’s decision and argued that it «follows the already known line of supporting Ukraine as far as possible», after days of speculation about the position that Berlin would finally adopt on these deliveries.
The Executive has explained that Germany will deliver 14 Leopard 2A6 which are in the arsenal of the German Armed Forces. It also expects to assemble in a short period two tank battalions, with a view also to providing training, logistics and ammunition, according to a German government statement.
Berlin’s approval also includes authorizations for other countries, such as Poland, to send their German-made tanks. Mateusz Morawiecki’s government had threatened to act unilaterally if it did not receive this permission.
