The leader of the Greek opposition, former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, has announced the filing of a motion of censure against the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis for allegedly spying on politicians, journalists and security service officials.
The controversy dates back to 2022, when the leader of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), Nikos Androulakis, denounced the interception of his communications. Subsequent investigations added more names to this plot, which has fully splashed Mitsotakis and cost the head of the intelligence services his job.
The prime minister has assured that he was not aware of the eavesdropping and would never have authorized it, but Tsipras holds Mitsotakis ultimately responsible. For this reason, he has announced a motion of censure that will start this Wednesday afternoon and will conclude on Friday, with the vote.
«For three days, the prime minister will be forced to give explanations,» said the leader of SYRIZA before the Parliament. Tsipras has accused Mitsotakis of lying about the extent to which he was aware of the spying, which also allegedly affected current Labor Minister Konstantinos Hatzidakis and senior members of the Armed Forces.
Mitsotakis has applauded the motion promoted by Tsipras, in which he sees «a good opportunity» to debate this controversy and review his years in power, according to the newspaper ‘Kathimerini’. The ruling party, New Democracy, has an absolute majority in Parliament, so theoretically its survival is not in danger.
«We will be in Parliament and on Friday we will win the vote. Until there are general elections, we will continue to do our job,» he said during a visit to the island of Crete.
The formation is also listed as a favorite for the next parliamentary elections, which will take place in principle in mid-May. However, the polls predict that it will need some other support to be able to stay in the government.
