The National Coordinator of Human Rights (CNDDHH) has filed a lawsuit this Sunday against the Peruvian Minister of the Interior, Vicente Romero Fernandez, and the general of the Peruvian National Police (PNP), Raul Alfaro Alvarado, after the operation that took place at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, in Lima.

Two lawyers, members of the human rights organization, have filed a habeas corpus suit in which they underlined the «arbitrary» detention of the demonstrators as well as the «abuse of power» during the intrusion of the authorities into the university campus.

The Seventh Constitutional Court of the Lima Superior Court of Justice of the Judiciary has received the lawsuit, which was led by CNDDHH executive secretary Jennie Dador.

The police stormed this Saturday using tanks at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, in Lima, to evict demonstrators who had locked themselves in the facilities in an action that has resulted in at least 205 detainees and criticism from international organizations.

As in the last demonstrations that have taken place in Peru, the authorities have restricted access to the Plaza San Martin, located in the historic center of Lima, in the face of student protests.

In addition, the CNDDHH has denounced the alleged detention of four students who are being held in the university residence of the San Marcos University, alleging that the authorities have not allowed access to lawyers or the Prosecutor’s Office.

HUMAN RIGHTS ORGANIZATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS CONDEMN THE ASSAULT At the end of the operation, which resulted in the arrest of more than 200 people, several human rights leaders and civil organizations have shown their solidarity with the anti-government demonstrators.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has called on the Peruvian authorities to guarantee the «legality and proportionality» of the intervention.

Meanwhile, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) has expressed its «concern» over the «police incursion, eviction and massive detentions» at the University of San Marcos and has urged the authorities to «account for the facts and guarantee the integrity and due process of all persons».

In this sense, also the former president of Bolivia, Evo Morales, very critical of the new government of Dina Boluarte, has condemned the police operation.

«We stand in solidarity with the authorities, teachers, students of the San Marcos University and the people of Peru. In the style of the worst dictatorships of the 70s and 80s, they stormed with tanks and weapons to this higher house of studies, without respecting university autonomy,» he posted on Twitter.
