
The tropical storm ‘Cheneso’ that hit the northeast coast of Madagascar on Thursday has caused the death of at least one person, while another victim remains missing and about 2,300 have been affected in two regions in the north of the country.
The provisional balance of the National Office of Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC) of the United Nations has recorded one fatality, in the region of Sava, one missing person, in the region of Diana, and a total of 2,224 victims of the disaster, including 734 households and 214 displaced persons. Authorities are still working on the data from Diana and Sava regions.
At this time, storm Cheneso is expected to move southwestward, through the center-west of the island, and to reach the Mozambique Channel during the early hours of January 23rd.
Madagascar authorities are now concerned about possible flooding, landslides, strong winds and sea currents.
