The Peruvian Prime Minister, Alberto Otárola, has assured this Friday that the fire in the judicial headquarters of Macusani, in the department of Puno, was «a sabotage against the State» carried out by demonstrators in the framework of the protests demanding the resignation of the president, Dina Boluarte.
«It has been a seizure that reveals planning and a sabotage that they wanted to do,» he said at a press conference, adding that police officers «did not fall into the provocation» of the protesters, as reported by the newspaper ‘La Republica’.
Otárola has indicated that the «seizure» of the Macusani police station in Puno was not, therefore, an act of protest, since «the life and integrity» of the police officers were «put at risk». «It was against the rule of law», he reiterated.
The protests began on Wednesday in Carabaya, Puno, throughout the morning, after which tensions escalated with the security forces, who fired to disperse the crowd, resulting in the death of at least two people.
After one of the deaths was confirmed, the clashes moved to the area around the headquarters of the judiciary in Macusani and to a nearby police station, for which the police had to evacuate their personnel by helicopter.
In addition to setting fire to the building and burning judicial files, there was also damage to the Macusani municipality, the headquarters of the Women’s Emergency Center and a pharmacy, according to Andina news agency.
