The Moroccan government has rejected a bill proposed by deputies of the Justice and Development Party to legalize menstruation leave of two days per month without the need for a medical certificate.

The party that submitted the proposal has 13 seats in the House of Representatives or Lower House of the Moroccan Parliament, so the initiative had little chance of succeeding.

The proposal aims to raise society’s awareness of the needs of working women when they suffer from menstruation, which is an impediment to gender equality in the workplace, according to the Moroccan news portal Hespress.

From the formation they have expressed their willingness to introduce modifications to the text of the proposal and to include any other idea that implies improvements for working conditions for women.

Japan legalized menstruation leave in 1947 and was followed by other Asian countries such as Indonesia, South Korea and Taiwan. In Europe, Spain legalized painful menstruation leave in 2022.
