The European Union’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, has condemned the «appalling precedent» set by the execution in Iran of the British Iranian citizen Alireza Akbari before declaring his opposition to the application of the death penalty «under any circumstances».
The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy conveyed his condolences to Akbari’s family and expressed his «full solidarity with the UK.» «The execution of a European citizen is an appalling precedent which the EU will follow closely,» he said.
«The death penalty violates the inalienable right to life enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and is the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment,» he added.
