U.S. National Security Council strategic communications coordinator John Kirby indicated Thursday that the Biden Administration is concerned about the health of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalni.

«We share their concerns and continue to believe that he should be released immediately, obviously; and, beyond that, we insist that he should receive appropriate medical care,» Kirby said.

Kirby has referred to Navalny’s wife Yulia Navalny’s call, made hours earlier, for the opposition leader to receive medical treatment, citing «humanity.»

«What goes through your heads, how do you live when you rejoice that you intentionally let a person get sick, that you don’t take care of him, that you don’t give him medicine,» Navalnia said, according to the dpa agency.

Navalnia’s desperate appeal comes at a time when the prominent opposition figure has been unable to attend a court hearing due to his health condition, his lawyer, Kira Yarmysh, said on Twitter.

Yarmysh has repeatedly complained that her client is being held in an isolation cell in deplorable conditions while he is also being denied health care to alleviate the episodes of fevers, chills and coughs he has been suffering from for some time.

In addition, a group of 290 Russian doctors have this week written a letter to the country’s president, Vladimir Putin, pleading for Navalni to be allowed to receive the health care demanded by his supporters and relatives.
