The speaker of the lower house of the Russian Parliament, Vyacheslav Volodin, has raised the possibility of amending the Criminal Code to seize the property of all those citizens living abroad who question Russia’s actions, for example the military offensive launched in Ukraine.
In this way, the head of the State Duma believes that it would «compensate» for the «damage» caused by the statements of those who, from outside, «consider it possible to insult Russia» and its citizens and military while openly supporting «villains».
In this regard, Volodin, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, said on Telegram that measures against such profiles «are not enough», given that there are people who even continue to live «comfortably» at Russia’s expense.
«They think they are unpunished. They think that Justice cannot reach them,» he added in his message, published this Friday. If implemented, the proposal would affect opposition leaders currently living outside Russia, where persecution of dissent has been toughened following the start of the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
