The Iranian judiciary has sentenced to five years in prison the daughter of former president Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanyani, arrested for her alleged involvement in protests following the death in custody of the young Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini.

Faezé Hashemi was arrested in September on charges of «inciting unrest» days after the start of the demonstrations following the death of Amini, who had been arrested for wearing the wrong headscarf and thus violating the Islamic dress code.

The accused, a former lawyer and journalist, also has «other cases» pending in court, her lawyer told the semi-official Mehr news agency. Hashemi had already been arrested on other occasions for her activism, recalls the Bloomberg agency.

The lawyer, Neda Shams, clarified on her Twitter account that the sentence is not final and that there is room for appeal.

Hashemi is the daughter of former President Rafsanyani, one of the leaders of the 1979 Islamic Revolution together with Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. He was later the de facto head of the army during the war against Iraq (1980-88) and served as president from 1989 to 1997.
