Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski stressed Monday that Russia is resorting to a kind of «war of attrition» using Iranian-origin drones.
«We have information that Russia is planning a long-term attack with Shahed drones,» Zelenski said in his daily evening address.
Moscow would thus seek «the exhaustion of our people, of our anti-aircraft defenses, of our energy, but we must and will do everything possible to make this terrorist intention fail, like all the others,» he argued.
Russian forces use so-called kamikaze drones to attack by launching themselves vertically on their targets regardless of their destruction. These are relatively slow Iranian-made drones that are easily shot down by anti-aircraft defenses, although their large numbers consume surveillance system resources. Moreover, the cost of shooting down these drones is much higher than the cost of the drone itself.
«It has been only two days since the beginning of the year and already more than 80 drones have been launched over Ukraine,» Zelenski assured.
Russian forces use these drones mainly to attack cities and infrastructure such as the power grid to cause as much damage as possible.
