Iranian authorities announced Tuesday the indictment of two French nationals and a Belgian for espionage and acts against national security, amid protests since September over the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, arrested for allegedly wearing the veil incorrectly.
Iranian Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Masud Shtayasi has indicated that the French nationals have been arrested for «espionage and conspiracy» and added that in the case of the Belgian citizen investigations are still ongoing, Iranian news agency ISNA reported.
On the other hand, Iran’s Supreme Court has ratified two death sentences handed down against participants in the demonstrations, while revoking two other execution sentences, as reported by Tasnim news agency.
So far, two demonstrators have been executed for their involvement in the protests and Iranian media estimate that more than 20 have already been sentenced to death. More than 500 demonstrators have been killed in the protests, according to human rights groups, which have condemned the harsh repression by the authorities.
For its part, Iran has denounced in recent weeks that Western countries are behind the wave of demonstrations and has confirmed the arrest of several foreigners whom it accuses of organizing or inciting the anti-government demonstrations.
