Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has recalled on Tuesday that the blood of Qasem Soleimani, head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Quds Force who died after a US bombing in Iraq in January 2020, will be «avenged».
«No, we have not and will not forget the blood of martyr Soleimani and I want to let you know that his revenge is certain. We will not let the murderers and perpetrators sleep peacefully,» he explained, as reported by the IRNA news agency.
In the framework of the anniversary of the general’s death, which is being celebrated on Tuesday, the Iranian president praised the figure of Soleimani for being «an element of identity building» as well as a «rebirth» of the Islamic identity in the region.
Raisi also referred to the United States, assuring that Washington seeks to «strip the youth of their identity» and make theirs prevail. In this way, he affirmed that Soleimani opposed American «extravagance, oppression, arrogance and unjust domination».
Then U.S. President Donald Trump claimed in a statement in January 2020 that Soleimani «was actively developing plans to attack U.S. diplomats in Iraq and throughout the region.»
Soleimani was one of the victims of a drone strike — which led Iraq’s Parliament to demand the departure of international troops from the country — perpetrated by the United States, which also included Abu Mahdi al Muhandis, then ‘number two’ of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) — a coalition of Iraqi pro-government militias supported by Iran.
