The Socialist government of Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa faces this Thursday its second motion of censure since it won an absolute majority in the elections of March 30, 2022.
This last initiative has been presented at the request of the Liberal Initiative (IL), which however has rejected together with the Left Bloc (BE) that it be debated and voted already this Thursday as the main opposition force, the Social Democratic Party, had urgently demanded, reports ‘Diario de Noticias’.
The spokeswoman of the leaders’ conference, the Socialist Maria de Luz Rosinha, explained that it has not yet been decided who will be in charge of defending the Government’s position, since «it is not mandatory that it be the Prime Minister».
The proposal was presented last Thursday hours after the resignation of the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Pedro Nuno Santos, the third resignation in the Government during the last week of December and the tenth since the Socialists achieved their absolute majority last March.
This motion presented by IL, the fourth force in the Assembly with eight seats, is the second one faced by Costa after the one launched in June by the ultra-right Chega! Like that one, the Socialists will use their parliamentary dominance to defeat this one as well.
