A clash between police officers and an armed group has left at least two police officers and five suspected criminals dead in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, after a bloody riot broke out at a prison in the city on Sunday.
Authorities said the attack is linked to investigations into the whereabouts of 30 prisoners who escaped from the State Social Reinsertion Center (Cereso) on Sunday, according to Mexican newspaper ‘Excelsior’.
Police reported that the two agents who died were investigating the escape of the inmates when they were shot at by hired assassins. They fled on foot, leaving their vehicles behind, and a chase ensued. The other agents shot down five of the suspects.
The escape from the prison, according to local information gathered by Infobae, began at around 6 a.m. (local time) with the appearance of an «armed commando aboard between three and six vans, some of them armored» at the prison gates.
Its occupants began to open fire on the security guards and unleashed chaos inside the prison, which some prisoners eventually took advantage of to escape.
