The Kremlin said Wednesday that it does not expect «changes» in Ukraine’s stance following Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to the United States during the day, the first time he has left the country since the beginning of the invasion unleashed on February 24 on the orders of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov has expressed doubts about the possibility that Kiev’s position «will change in the direction of a negotiation process» to seek a peace agreement. «I don’t think so,» he said, before even warning of «an escalation of the conflict.»
«The supply of weapons continues. The range of weapons being delivered (to Ukraine) is expanding. All this, of course, leads to an aggravation of the conflict and, in fact, it is not going well for Ukraine,» he reiterated, as reported by the Russian news agency Interfax.
U.S. officials confirmed late Tuesday that Zelensky will travel to Washington on Wednesday to meet with U.S. President Joe Biden and participate in a special session on Capitol Hill to address members of the House of Representatives and the Senate. The Ukrainian president himself has said via his Twitter account that he is «on his way to the United States to strengthen Ukraine’s resilience and defense capabilities.»
The visit, which has not been finalized until the last minute and has been kept secret for security reasons, will coincide with the Biden Administration’s intention to send Ukraine a new defense aid package that will include Patriot missile systems, CNN has reported. Zelenski has not left Ukraine since the outbreak of the war, despite the offer of some countries for the president to seek refuge from Russian aggression.
