Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko on Tuesday appointed Sergei Aleinik as foreign minister to replace Vladimir Mikei, who suddenly passed away at the end of November.

Aleinik, who until now served as first deputy minister in the Belarusian diplomatic portfolio, has expressed his gratitude to President Lukashenko for the trust he has placed in him.

The Belarusian head of state had previously met with Aleinik, with whom he discussed «all the details of his future management» and later finally signed the decree of appointment, BelTA news agency reported.

Aleinik had previously served as representative of Belarus to the United Nations, as ambassador to the Vatican and also to the United Kingdom. He now replaces Mikei, who died suddenly on 26 November.

According to the Belarusian news agency, Foreign Ministry spokesman Anatoly Glaz has been in charge of confirming the news, although he has not added further details.

Makei, whose last known service was traveling to Armenia’s capital, Yerevan, has represented Belarusian diplomacy for the last ten years, since August 2012.

Regarded as a man close to the president, Alexander Lukashenko, he served between 2000 and 2008 as head of the Presidential Administration.

Prior to that, he worked in the internal bodies of the Ministry of Defense until 1993 and later served as a counselor at the Belarusian Embassy in France and Belarusian representative to the Council of Europe.
