Germany will receive liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Qatar from 2026 and for a period of at least 15 years, Qatari Energy Minister Saad Sharida al Kaabi, who is also chairman and CEO of QatarEnergy, has announced.

Under the agreement, a subsidiary of U.S.-based ConocoPhillips will purchase an annual two million tons of LNG for delivery from 2026 to the terminal currently under construction at Brunsbüttel in northern Germany.

The LNG volumes will be sourced from the two joint ventures held by QatarEnergy and ConocoPhillips with interests in Qatar’s North Field East (NFE) and North Field South (NFS) projects.

«These agreements are momentous for a number of reasons,» the Qatari minister said, stressing that they mark the first long-term LNG supply to the German market, with a supply period extending for at least 15 years, «thus contributing to Germany’s long-term energy security.»

«This is a concrete demonstration of QatarEnergy’s determination to provide reliable energy supplies to the world’s major markets and of our commitment to the German people,» he added.

The Qatari minister also indicated that the emirate continues to engage in dialogue with its European partners «with the aim of achieving greater energy security, long-term market stability and a smoother energy transition for the benefit of all.»

Last week, Qatar Energy signed an agreement with China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) for the supply of four million tons per year of LNG to the Asian giant for 27 years.
