Authorities in Sweden reported Tuesday that police in Stockholm have arrested a couple suspected of spying for a foreign country in the midst of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Swedish Security Service (SAPO) said in a statement that one of the detainees «is suspected of serious illegal Intelligence activities against Sweden and other foreign powers.» «The other is alleged to have aided and abetted this,» it said in a statement.

Sources close to the matter have indicated to the newspaper ‘Aftonbladet’ that it is a man and a woman in their 60s who have been arrested for carrying out illegal activities.

The Minister of Defense, Pal Jonson, has confirmed the arrests, although the Ministry has not yet made a statement. The Swedish Public Prosecutor’s Office, for its part, has indicated that the crimes in question had allegedly begun in 2013 and had continued until their arrest.

The SAPO, for its part, has stressed that the case in question is not related to any ongoing investigation.
