Demonstrators of the Unión Juvenil Cruceñista (UJC) have clashed again with the police this Saturday night in the city of Santa Cruz, epicenter of the «civic» strike promoted by the opposition against the Bolivian government, and have destroyed a police station.
«In an act of provocation, the violent groups moved in vans and motorcycles, armed with sticks and stones towards the Plan Tres Mil –currently Andrés Ibáñez citadel– (a neighborhood of Santa Cruz) to carry out a town meeting,» reported the official Bolivian news agency, ABI.
After the meeting, violence broke out between demonstrators and counter-demonstrators against the indefinite mandatory strike implemented by the opposition and in spite of the reinforcements received by the Police. In addition to the destroyed police station, an officer was injured in the ear by the impact of a stone.
The police protection had been reinforced after the opposition, which supports the governor of Santa Cruz, Fernando Camacho, announced his intention to «take» the Andrés Ibáñez citadel.
