Ethiopian military officials and rebels in the Tigray region have agreed to form a joint committee to implement an international «disarmament, demobilization and reintegration» program and facilitate humanitarian corridors, after five days of meeting in Nairobi.

The announcement came Saturday after negotiations between top Ethiopian government military commanders led by Marshal Berhanu Jula and Tigray region forces led by Lt. Gen. Tadesse Worede came to an end, ‘Addis Standard’ reports.

Jula affirmed, in the appearance with the media, that the two parties «have been engaged in good spirit» during the whole conversation and now they will fully dedicate themselves to implement the agreement.

Tadesse, for his part, said that the people of Tigray have «suffered untold misery for the past two years and are still suffering» and pointed to this commission as the «hope and expectation» that this suffering will soon come to an end, as reported by the local media.

Among the points sealed, both parties have agreed to guarantee the safety of humanitarian workers and organizations when assisting those in need in the region of Tigray and its neighbor, in addition to protecting civilians in these territories, although the text of the cessation of hostilities does not recognize Eritrea by name, but mentions instead «foreign forces».

After the appearance, they formalized the agreement by signing the Declaration of the Executive Plan of the Pretoria Peace Accord.
