An Iranian prisoner identified as Nematollah Barahuyi was reportedly hanged this Sunday in Zahedan prison even though he was already dead because he died after resisting the news that he was going to be hanged, according to the Norway-based organization Iran Human Rights (IHR).

Barahuyi, an ethnic Baloch, was in prison after being sentenced to death for drug trafficking. Early Sunday morning he was notified that he was to be hanged, but he resisted and during the struggle he received a fatal blow to his neck, according to the Hal Vash news portal, quoted by IHR.

Barahuyi’s body was also hanged so that hanging could be recorded as the cause of death and thus avoid prosecution.

Barahuyi’s body was hanged next to that of another Zahedan baluche, Amanola Alizehi. Neither of the two hangings have been publicized in the Iranian media, as is customary.

In the first six months of the year, 251 people were executed, including six women and 67 members of the Baloch minority. This is more than twice as many executions as in the same period in 2021, according to the IHR tally.
