Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said Thursday that his country is suffering an «arms pandemic» and described as «essential» the control of trafficking from other states to Mexico.

During his speech at an international conference on the business of arms trafficking to Mexico, Ebrard showed a map of the country detailing the main municipalities in which weapons have been seized since 2020 and highlighting those bordering the United States, where there is a higher incidence.

«Our whole country has a pandemic of weapons with different degrees of intensity,» said the head of Mexican diplomacy, noting that in relation to the United States has put on the table to reform the ‘quid pro quo’ in security matters.

«It is not possible to reduce violence with the current volume of arms trafficking,» added Ebrad during his speech, according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry.

According to government data, Mexico is the fifth country with the most unregistered firearms in the world. In addition, conversations on the issues of gun violence, gun trafficking and the responsibility of gun companies are «still incipient» in the civil service, education and the media.

For this reason, the Mexican Executive intends to «produce» knowledge and design public policies to combat gun violence, as detailed by the Mexican diplomacy.
