The Organization of American States (OAS) will send a mission to Peru on November 20, thus complying with the request of the country’s president, Pedro Castillo, that the organization preserve democratic institutions and the legitimate exercise of power.
This was announced by the Peruvian Foreign Minister, César Landa, who informed that the authorities have proposed to the OAS that the visit to the country take place during the following two days -November 21 and 22-, reports RPP.
Landa stressed that, for the moment, the members of the OAS mission have not changed, so that the high-level group will be formed by the foreign ministers of Argentina, Belize, Ecuador, Guatemala and Paraguay, among other prominent representatives of South American nations.
The mission is scheduled to meet with government authorities, including Castillo himself, as well as with the president of Congress, José Williams, the Attorney General, Patricia Benavides, and the head of the Judiciary, Elvia Barrios.
In mid-October, the OAS Permanent Council decided to send a high-level delegation to Peru to conduct an analysis of the political situation in the Andean country following a request from President Castillo.
The Peruvian Executive formally requested the organization to activate Articles 17 and 18 of the Democratic Charter, through which the organization may provide assistance when «the government of a member state considers that its democratic political institutional process or its legitimate exercise of power is at risk».
