The U.S. government warned Russia on Tuesday that the use of dirty bombs or any other nuclear weaponry in Ukraine would have consequences, an event it would call an «incredibly serious mistake.»
Specifically, U.S. President Joe Biden has warned Russian authorities that if they make use of a dirty bomb in the framework of the war in Ukraine, they would be making «an incredibly serious mistake.»
Biden acknowledged Tuesday that he has spent «a lot of time» talking about the possibility that, with its allegations about Ukraine’s alleged plans to make use of a dirty bomb, Russia is actually paving the way for a false flag attack.
«Let me say that Russia would be making an incredibly serious mistake if it used a tactical nuclear weapon,» the U.S. leader told the media, according to Bloomberg news agency.
Biden stressed that, for the moment, the United States is not in a position to say whether or not it is a false flag operation.
Likewise, the U.S. Pentagon has stated that if Russia were to deploy a dirty bomb or other type of nuclear weapon in Ukraine «there would be consequences», according to Defense Department spokesman Pat Ryder.
Those consequences would have been communicated to Russia on a variety of levels, as detailed by Ryder, who assured that for the Pentagon the accusations that Ukraine is preparing a dirty bomb «are patently false.»
He also announced that the US Department of Defense maintains «sophisticated technical means» to detect nuclear or radiological detonations of any kind.
«It’s something we take very seriously and continue to monitor 24/7,» he added.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu contacted his U.S. counterpart, Lloyd Austin, and his senior counterparts in the European Union over the weekend to alert of Ukraine’s alleged plans to use a dirty bomb.
The major Western powers have rejected these Russian warnings, which they have interpreted as part of the Kremlin’s preparations for a false flag operation to accuse Kiev.
A dirty nuclear bomb, or dirty bomb, as it is described by international organizations, is an explosive device capable of dispersing radioactive material, whose destructive capacity is significantly less than that of a nuclear weapon designed for this specific purpose, but which nevertheless represents a serious threat due to its polluting nature.
Russia had previously expressed its fears about this situation by accusing Kiev in October of trying to turn the Zaporiyia nuclear power plant into a «dirty nuclear bomb» through constant attacks on the facility and its surroundings, for which Kiev and Moscow blame each other.
