At least 35 people have died following the passage of storm Sitrang along the coast of Bangladesh, as reported by the Bangladeshi media ‘Observer’.
Most of the deaths are due to falling trees and capsized boats. In addition, the storm has downed trees and power poles, and water has flooded several localities.
«We are still assessing the damage,» Kamrun Najar, an official with the Department of Disaster Management, told DPA news agency. Najar added that his office is receiving new reports on the devastation of Sitrang’s passage.
Among the dead are eight workers who drowned after the boat they were working on sank, reports BDNews24.
The storm has affected tens of thousands of homes, 33,000 hectares of crops and wiped out thousands of fisheries. The effects of the storm on the fishing vessel amounted to 68 million rupees (about 576,000 euros) in losses.
