The U.S. government announced Thursday a humanitarian aid package for Turkey and Syria valued at $85 million (80 million euros) that will go to fund its partners working on the ground.
This was announced in a statement by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), detailing that the contribution will go to help people affected by «devastating earthquakes» in Turkey and Syria.
«USAID is providing emergency food and shelter for refugees and newly displaced people, winter supplies to help families cope with the cold, critical health care services to provide trauma support, safe drinking water to prevent disease, and health and hygiene assistance to keep people safe and healthy,» the agency’s missive reads.
The earthquakes have caused since Monday about 17,000 deaths in Turkey, 1,262 in the areas of Syria controlled by the government of Bashar al-Assad and another 1,970 in rebel-held areas of Idlib and Aleppo provinces (northwest), according to various balances published during the last hours.
