Peru’s former president Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000) was taken to a hospital in Lima, the capital, on Monday night for an episode of heart failure, although his condition is stable, according to the Social Health Insurance (EsSalud).
«The medical staff on duty managed to stabilize the patient and he is in the observation room. Auxiliary examinations have also been indicated,» EsSalud reported through its profile on the social network Twitter.
Fujimori has been transferred to Hospital II Vitarte from the Barbadillo prison where he has been since 2009 serving a 25-year sentence for crimes against humanity for the Barrios Altos and La Cantuta massacres, in which some twenty people were killed.
The former Peruvian president has frequently left prison to be admitted due to his health problems in recent years, as have been his attempts to get out of the 2009 sentence by filing habeas corpus appeals, the last one just a few days ago, which have so far been rejected.
The Peruvian justice system also approved in mid-December the opening of criminal proceedings against the former president, as well as several of his health ministers, for the case of forced sterilizations of almost 350,000 women and 25,000 men from different indigenous communities during his government between 1990 and 2000.
