The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has decreed on Monday seven days of national mourning due to the strong earthquakes that have shaken the country and have already left more than 1,600 dead and 11,000 injured.
Erdogan has shared a publication in his official Twitter profile where he has informed that during this week and until January 12, the national flag will fly at half mast not only in Turkish territory, but also in diplomatic headquarters abroad.
About 2,600 people have been killed by the succession of earthquakes registered this Monday in the south of Turkey, near the border with Syria, according to data provided by the authorities of both countries and the ‘white helmets’ that serve in Syrian opposition areas.
In Turkey alone, the authorities are aware of at least 1,651 fatalities and more than 11,000 injured, according to the Minister of Health, Fahrettin Koca, reports the Anatolia agency. The balance corresponds to the ten provinces affected, although it could increase in the coming hours due to the high number of people trapped in the rubble.
