Several mortar shells hit the area around Somalia’s Presidential Palace in the country’s capital Mogadishu on Wednesday, hours before the start of a summit of regional leaders to address the military offensive against the Al Shabaab terrorist group.
According to information gathered by the Somali news portal Jowhar, a total of five shells have hit the area, with no reports of casualties or material damage for the moment.
The attack took place shortly after the arrival in Mogadishu of the leaders of Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti for the summit, which led the Somali authorities to tighten security in and around the capital.
Somalia has in recent months stepped up offensives against Al Shabaab with the support of local clans and militias as part of a series of decisions taken by President Hassan Shaykh Mohamud, who pledged on taking office to put the fight against terrorism at the heart of his efforts to stabilize the African country.
