Authorities in Afghanistan have raised the death toll to more than 160 as a result of harsh weather conditions this winter, adding that hundreds of homes have collapsed due to rain and flooding.
Afghan Disaster Management Minister Rahman Zahid said at least 168 people have been killed by the «harsh winter» in 24 provinces of the central Asian country, according to the Afghan news agency Jaama Press.
He also noted that around 80,000 head of cattle have died because of the weather, while the weather agency has indicated that it could snow in 19 provinces over the next few days, which would worsen the situation.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned last week that Afghanistan «faces an unprecedented humanitarian crisis with a very real risk of systemic collapse and human catastrophe.» In this regard, it stressed that 28.3 million people, nearly two-thirds of the population, will need urgent humanitarian assistance in 2023 to «survive».
