The Peruvian Attorney General’s Office said Wednesday that it respects the right to protest as long as it excludes violence, warning that it will carry out an investigation to ensure that human rights and intercultural approaches are respected.
This was stated by the Public Prosecutor’s Office in a statement, in which it stressed that it regrets the deaths that occurred during the social protests that began when the Congress deposed former President Pedro Castillo after he announced the dissolution of the Andean Parliament.
«The Public Prosecutor’s Office reaffirms its commitment and obligation to prevent and prosecute crime. Thus, it respects the right to protest within the framework of the protection of Human Rights that excludes acts of violence», reads the letter released by the judicial body.
In this sense, the Prosecutor’s Office has emphasized that it respects the autonomy of the powers and constitutional bodies of the Peruvian State, recalling that it is prevented from intervening in the decisions of the Government bodies.
«Such mutual respect also prevents the intervention in the decisions of the government bodies and in the legal criteria adopted by the prosecutors in the exercise of their functions, in accordance with their competences recognized in the conventional, constitutional and legal order in force», added the Prosecutor’s Office.
