The Brazilian government announced on Thursday its immediate incorporation into the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), one of the main blocs of political debate in the region.
The Brazilian Foreign Ministry has informed the CELAC member countries of «its full and immediate reincorporation to all political and technical instances of the mechanism».
«Brazil’s return to CELAC is an indispensable step towards the recomposition of our diplomatic heritage and the full reinsertion of the country in the international community,» the ministerial portfolio states.
Likewise, the Foreign Ministry stressed that it is a «privileged mechanism for the promotion of political dialogue, consultation and regional cooperation on issues such as health, social inclusion, environment, food and energy security».
With this, the office has confirmed that the Brazilian President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, will participate in the VII CELAC Summit, thanking his Argentine counterpart, Alberto Fernández, who as interim president of the forum, extended an invitation to him.
Following this announcement, the Argentine Foreign Minister, Santiago Cafiero, welcomed Lula, remarking that «it is time to build a new relationship with Brazil», the «main trading partner» of Buenos Aires.
In this sense, Cafiero emphasized that the reincorporation of his neighboring country to CELAC «adds certainty and strengthens the region», as he made known through a message on his profile on the social network Twitter.
