The president of Argentina, Alberto Fernandez, has met this Tuesday with a group of governors to gather support and present an impeachment process against the head of the Supreme Court of Justice, Horacio Rosatti, and the investigation of other positions in the highest Argentine judicial body.
«We have had a meeting with Mr. President with the aim of propitiating the signing of an impeachment request within the framework of Article 53 of the National Constitution, by virtue of the poor performance of functions of the four judges of the Supreme Court of Justice», indicated the governor of the province of Chaco, Jorge Capitanich, as reported by the news agency Télam.
However, the initiative promoted by the Argentine president has not been supported by governors with a certain political weight, such as the governor of the province of Córdoba, Juan Schiaretti, or the governor of the province of Santa Fe, Omar Perotti, as reported by the newspaper ‘Clarín’.
Fernandez stated on Sunday in a public letter that he would push together with several governors for an impeachment trial «so that the conduct (of Rosatti) in the performance of his duties is investigated». «We will also require that the conduct of the remaining members of the highest court be investigated,» he warned.
The case goes back to conversations between Rosatti’s spokesman, Silvio Robles, and the Buenos Aires Minister of Security and Justice, Marcelo D’ Alessandro, in the context of the dispute between the central government and the Buenos Aires administration over the distribution of funds.
