The American tennis player of Czech origin Martina Navratilova, 66 years old and winner of 18 Grand Slam titles, has been diagnosed with larynx and breast cancer, although both are in the early stages and the prognosis is positive, according to the player herself announced on her social networks.
An inflamed lymph node would have led Martina Navratilova to undergo the tests. «I hope for a favorable outcome. It will be miserable for a while, but I will fight with all my strength,» said the 1994 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports.
A spokeswoman for the tennis player hinted at the good prognosis of the doctors regarding both diseases, which will begin to be treated from next week in New York.
In 2010 she was diagnosed with non-invasive breast cancer and, after six months of treatment, the former world number one was considered cured. At that point, she «cried for about 15 seconds» and then asked the doctor, «Okay, what can we do, what’s the next step?» confessed Navratilova.
Due to her illness, the tennis expert will not travel to the Australian Open, the first ‘big one’ of the season, which will be played from January 16 to 29 and which she had planned to commentate for a television with rights.
