The Nepalese justice has released this Friday the serial killer Charles Sobhraj, known as ‘The Snake’, after the Supreme Court ruled his release from prison to be deported to France within fifteen days.
Sobhraj, who admitted to committing at least twelve murders, is now at the disposal of the Asian country’s immigration authorities. The court decided to release him on medical grounds, given that he has served 95 percent of his sentence.
The confessed killer, who was nicknamed ‘The Snake’ for his ability to impersonate his victims and evade justice, has spent two decades in prison after being found guilty of robbing and murdering Western tourists in the 1970s on the Hippie Trail to and from South Asia.
Sobhraj, 78, suffers from heart disease and needs open-heart surgery, according to the court. His lawyers had repeatedly sought the court’s intervention and filed several habeas corpus petitions seeking clemency. They had also asked for a presidential pardon.
He was arrested on September 19, 2003 and his sentence was scheduled to end on September 18, 2023. The man, also called the ‘bikini killer’, has French nationality but was born in Vietnam.
