Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said Friday he was «proud» of the expulsion of the country’s ambassador to Peru, Pablo Monroy, and assured that both he and the relatives of former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo «are safe» in Mexico City.
The president thanked Monroy for his «outstanding work» as ambassador to Peru and expressed that it is «a mark of pride to represent Mexico in a situation of conflict and to uphold the principle of the right to asylum».
He referred to the ambassador’s work in getting Castillo’s relatives out of the country after he was arrested in early December after announcing the dissolution of Congress and calling elections.
The arrival in Mexico of Castillo’s wife, Lilia Paredes, and their two children, Arnold and Alondra, was confirmed Thursday by Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard. «Our country has honored its tradition of asylum,» he stressed.
For López Obrador, Castillo’s arrest is «a blow from conservatism and the Peruvian rulers», who, as in Mexico and other countries, «are classist, racist and very corrupt» and only aspire to control «the economic interests» of their countries.
On Wednesday, Peru’s Prime Minister, Alberto Otárola, confirmed that Paredes is being investigated in the Andean nation for an alleged crime of criminal organization.
