López Obrador celebrates the arrival of Castillo’s family in Mexico: «We will protect them here».

The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador – PRESIDENCIA DE MÉXICO

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, celebrated Thursday the arrival of the family of former Peruvian president Pedro Castillo: «They are welcome in Mexico and here we will take care of them and protect them,» he emphasized.

The arrival in Mexico of Castillo’s wife, Lilia Paredes, and their two children, Arnold and Alondra, was confirmed hours earlier by Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard. «Our country has honored its tradition of asylum,» he stressed.

In this sense, López Obrador has stressed in his daily morning appearance, on this occasion from Quintana Roo, that they have asserted their right as a country to grant political asylum and that «the rest is a matter of Peru».

López Obrador has valued that Castillo’s arrest has been «a blow from conservatism and the Peruvian rulers», who as in Mexico and other countries «are classist, racist, and very corrupt» and only aspire to the control of «the economic interests» of their countries.

Mexico is one of the countries in the region that has been most vocal about what is happening in Peru since a couple of weeks ago, when former President Castillo unsuccessfully tried to dissolve Congress and call elections. After seeing how unsuccessful his maneuver was, he tried to take refuge in the Mexican Embassy in Lima, however he was intercepted and apprehended by his own security team.

In response, the new Peruvian government has reproached the «interference» that Mexico would be committing with its reactions to what is happening within its borders, even asking López Obrador to stop referring to the matter.

Although Peruvian authorities have informed Mexican authorities that Paredes is being investigated for criminal organization, she cannot be extradited as long as the political asylum granted by López Obrador remains in effect.
