The Supreme Court of Preparatory Investigation of Peru has approved this Tuesday at the last minute the formalization of the process against the former president of Peru Pedro Castillo for the alleged commission of a crime of rebellion.

The decision, announced by Judge Juan Carlos Checkley in statements reported by ‘El Comercio’, formalizes the investigation against the former president and his former prime minister Aníbal Torres, thus assuming the jurisdiction of the case, which until now was under the command of the Peruvian Attorney General’s Office.

Likewise, with the formalization of the case, the Public Prosecutor’s Office will be able to request the preventive detention of Castillo, whose preliminary detention ends this Wednesday, December 14, when he could be released.

The Attorney General, Patricia Benavides, has accused the former president of the alleged crimes of rebellion, conspiracy, abuse of authority and disturbance of the public tranquility. Torres has been charged with the alleged crimes of rebellion and conspiracy as co-perpetrator.

Pedro Castillo is being held in custody after he announced last December 7 the dissolution of Congress and the establishment of a government of exception. His decree, which did not receive any support, ended up leading the Parliament to support a motion of censure against him and his subsequent arrest by the country’s Police.
